Australia's Marine Environment (MARS2005) is a University of Queensland course open to both domestic students (if not studying a Marine Science major or a dual degree) and Study Abroad students. The major aims of this course is to provide students who have no previous training in biology and ecology with 1) An integrated understanding of Australia's coasts and seas and 2) An understanding of the how science is done through the conduct of hypothesis driven experiments and use of published literature. The first part of the course focuses on Australian maritime geography, the fundamentals of ocean circulation, tides, sediment transport, marine plants, marine invertebrates, fishes, marine reptiles and marine mammals. Based on this foundation of knowledge the course then moves to a systems approach focusing in turn on estuarine and coastal systems (using Moreton Bay as an example) and then to coral reef systems (with Heron Island as the prime example). To reinforce the knowledge learnt in lectures and demonstrate to students how field-based research is done, there are two optional fieldtrips one to Moreton Bay Research Station (on Stradbroke Island, or Straddie) and another to Heron Island Research Station (on Heron Island, shown in the video). The Heron Island fieldtrip is carried out over 5 days. Students participate in field activities that disseminate concepts concerning reef flat ecology, reef structure and development, the ecology of subtidal waters, sand island ...
