Oil Spill Top Kill

In the above video you can see "Top Kill" BP's attempt to stop the oil spill which failed. The procedure was supposed to pump drilling mud into the blowout preventer and increase hydrostatic pressure to the well and push the oil down so they could cement the well shut. As you can see, the pressure of the well was too great and the mud blasted out of the riser pipe and out of the blowout preventer. After three attempts and at least 60000 barrels of mud, the procedure was shut down by US Scientist Chu and Department of Energy scientists from the National Laboratories who deemed the danger of something worse happening to the existing riser pipe and BOP structures. The next effort will be directed to Lower Marine Riser Package LMRP. BP will cut the riser and place a containment valve onto the pipe. A small cap will be placed over the leak which is a variation of the "top hat" procedure. If the LMRP option works as planned, the oil will be pumped to a ship on the surface of the ocean. When the riser pipe is cut above the BOP, government scientists expect the flow to increase by about 20%. The kink in the riser pipe is constricting the flow like a garden hose that is bent. If the LMRP fails, the last hope is the two relief wells which are being drilled. The first one is scheduled to be completed in August. This is already the largest oil spill in US History, and perhaps it may become the most catastrophic environmental disaster ever in US. The well is now leaking 12000 to 19000 ...
