Puget Sound Marine Habitats - Eelgrass

Eelgrass is an abundant plant found in sandy and mud habitats along the fringes of Puget Sound. Eelgrass thrives in the sun and produces oxygen and nutrients for the nearshore ecosystem. It grows in intertidal waters typically to a depth of 12 feet. Eelgrass provides a three dimensional structure in which salmon, other fish, and shellfish can feed and hide. It also stabilizes the nearshore sand and helps to absorb current and wave energy.
