Captain Andy Malpass provides a potted history of the evolution and structure of Protection and Indemnity Clubs from the mid 1850s with the advent vessels powered by engines. In plain words Captain Malpass advises that Protection and Indemnity (P&I) is the traditional name for the coverage obtained by Shipowners and Charterers to protect and indemnify themselves against their legal liabilities to third parties. Shipowners entering their vessels with a particular P & I Association become members of that Association; thus, by definition the Associations are called Clubs. Andy explains the role of a correspondent plays for P & I Clubs and in particular the assistance provided in cases of medical repatriation of seafarers. The most important thing is the well being of the seafarer concerned. This can mean a period of hospitalization abroad prior to a seafarer being in a stable enough condition that permits repatriation before being attended to in a hospital at in his home country. Captain Malpass advises that seafarers should fully disclose any medical conditions known to them during their pre employment medical examinations in order not to jeopardize their well being while serving on board and points out that for certain conditions, it is permissible for seafarers to take medication on board with them to control their conditions.
